Introduction to Retro-Modern

The Retro-Modern Format

Retro-Modern Magic is a nostalgic, balanced, exciting, and evolving casual constructed format of Magic the Gathering. As the power level of Magic cards has crept upwards and new types of cards have emerged the "feel" and intention of the game has changed. Retro-Modern recaptures the balance and nostalgia of the game with a fun and creative format.

Legality & Rules: Any Modern legal card that has been printed on the original, classic card frames is allowed. Modern rules and current errata apply, that's it. Any printing of a legal card is allowed, but playing with the classic frames is encouraged.

Card Pool: The card pool expands with every new Modern legal set and there is a possibility for new promos, a reprint heavy set, or another Timeshifted set to further expand the format. Modern Horizons offers a reprint heavy set that is specifically designed with Modern in mind. Time Spiral Remastered will offer several new cards as well.

Cards become legal in one of two ways:
  1. A card originally printed prior to 8th Edition (July 28th, 2003) is reprinted in a Modern legal set.
  2. A Modern legal card is printed on the original, classic card frames; generally some sort of Time Spiral or promo card.
Note that Retro-Modern includes any Modern card previously printed with the classic frames, which includes promos for Crucible of Worlds, Sword of Fire and Ice, Noble Hierarch, and others.

A complete list of legal cards is available at Scryfall.com by searching "is:old f:modern" or by clicking here. You will find a strong mana base, many classic cards, powerful Modern staples, and many cards you would not normally play in Modern.

Why play Retro-Modern?
  • Feel - It feels like how Magic was intended to be played. Like you still keep all your cards in a shoebox and any deck has a chance of winning.
  • Balance - Because the card pool pulls from Modern, the cards are well thought out and vetted for playability.
  • Power Level - There are no Planeswalkers, no turn two, easy infinite combos, or devastating cards. The format brings Magic back to a chess game with pace, strategy, and creative deck construction.
  • Deck Construction - The card pool is made up of many Modern cards that would not otherwise be competitive, but are very interesting. Building a consistent deck is challenging and a real test of your abilities!
  • Playability - It is just plain fun.
  • Modern - All the cards are still Modern legal.
